What is Cannabinol (CBN) and What Does it Do?

Arbors Wellness Seal

There are a great deal of cannabinoids found in the trichomes of cannabis that have a variety of effects on the body. The most famous ones you’ve probably heard of: THC and CBD. Yet there are over a hundred different cannabinoids found in marihuana that have a whole variety of effects. Cannabinol (frequently abbreviated to CBN) was the first cannabinoid to be isolated from cannabis in 1940 and much like CBD it is considered to be non-psychoactive with many medicinal benefits.

What is CBN?

When marihuana is stored for a long period of time it oxidizes. You can usually detect the difference in older cannabis by a change in color, smell, and taste when it’s smoked or vaporized. This oxidation causes THC (the psychoactive cannabinoid) to convert to CBN. This is why older marihuana can have a different effect than that of freshly cured marihuana even if it is the same strain.

What Does CBN Do?

CBN is not considered psychoactive so you won’t experience a “stoned” effect when using it by itself. However, it is known to make users feel drowsy, especially when used alongside THC. This is ideal for those suffering from insomnia or those with trouble staying asleep.

Unlike THC, CBN binds mostly to the CB2 receptors in the body which are mostly found in immune cells like T-cells and B-cells. As such, it is considered to have potential immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also considered to be an anticonvulsant and may trigger apoptosis as it binds to CB2 receptors. For more information on apoptosis, check out our blog.

In topical applications, CBN has the potential to be used in the treatment of psoriasis and burns.

What Kind of CBN Products Are There?

As of now there are few if any strains that specialize in high CBN content. Yet any strain has the potential to become high in CBN if you just store it in a sealed container for an extended period of time. For those who do not want to smoke or vaporize there are a variety of other products available depending on where you are located.

Mary’s Medicinals is a company that makes a variety of products high in CBN that are carried here at Arbors Wellness. CBN transdermal patches are one such product that are ideal for helping those with sleep issues as you can wear them to bed and have a continuous dose of CBN delivered over the course of several hours. For more information on what products are available check out our menu or speak with one of our consultants over the phone or in person.
